21-YEAR-OLD KNUST FINAL-YEAR STUDENT ROBBED AND STABBED TO DEATH ON CAMPUS

In a shocking and heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves through the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) community, a 22-year-old final-year student, Joan Yabuni, was robbed and brutally stabbed to death near the Disability Department on campus. The tragic event, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, February 27, 2025, has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the university’s security measures and left students demanding immediate action.

According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports, Joan had been studying with friends on campus before the incident. After their study session, her friends escorted her to the KSB area, as her hostel was located near Kotei. Tragically, that was the last time she was seen alive. Her lifeless body was later discovered near the Disability Department, bearing multiple stab wounds.

The gruesome images and videos of the scene, which have since circulated on social media, paint a chilling picture of the brutality she endured. Students and members of the KNUST community are now grappling with grief, anger, and fear, as many question how such a heinous crime could occur on a campus that prides itself on being a safe haven for learning.

SRC President Demands Accountability

In response to the tragedy, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President, Kane Nana Francis, issued a strongly worded statement expressing the student body’s collective grief and demanding answers from the university administration.

“It is with a heavy heart that I write to you regarding the devastating loss of our fellow student Joan Yabuni, whose passing has left us all in deep shock and sorrow,” the statement read. “The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident remain unclear, and as a student body, we stand united in demanding answers, accountability, and justice.”

The SRC President revealed that he has formally requested access to all available CCTV footage from the university management, as well as a full disclosure of the measures being taken to investigate the matter. He assured students that he would not rest until justice is served for Joan Yabuni.

“In these difficult times, the SRC urges each of you to remain calm and allow due process to take its course,” the statement continued. “Let us support one another, especially those who were close to the deceased, and channel our concerns in a manner that upholds our collective integrity.”

Kane Nana Francis also called on anyone with relevant information about the incident to come forward and assist in uncovering the truth. He emphasized the need for enhanced security measures on campus to prevent future tragedies, stating, “Your safety and well-being remain our utmost priority, and we will continue to advocate for a secure and supportive learning environment.”

A Call for Action

The brutal murder of Joan Yabuni has reignited long-standing concerns about the safety of students on KNUST’s campus. Many students have taken to social media to express their outrage, accusing the university of failing to prioritize their security.

“How many more lives must be lost before the university stops pretending and starts protecting us?” one student lamented

Others have called for immediate measures, such as increased police patrols, better lighting in secluded areas, and the installation of more CCTV cameras across campus.
