The United States is planning to deport 50 Ghanaians by mid-2025 because they have been given final orders to leave.
This information was shared by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
During a session in Parliament on Thursday, March 13, the minister explained the current situation.
He stated that 150 Ghanaians are being held in various locations across the U.S.
They are detained for reasons such as entering the country illegally, committing internet fraud, and being involved in rape cases.
Out of these 150 individuals, 50 have been issued final orders for deportation and will be sent back to Ghana in the upcoming months.
Additionally, the minister mentioned that deportation arrangements for three of these individuals are already complete.
They have flights scheduled to return to Ghana on March 19, March 28, and April 1, 2025.
The other 100 people in detention are either in the process of appealing their cases or do not have active cases anymore.
“Currently, there are 150 Ghanaians in detention across various centres in the US who are awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry. 50 out of the 150 individuals have received final deportation orders from the court. The deportation is expected to take place by mid-year 2025,” he said.
The minister mentioned that Ghana’s team in Washington has been very active in handling the situation.
They managed to help one person get released due to their health problems.
The Embassy also interviewed 10 people to confirm they were citizens of Ghana and to make sure their cases were handled properly.
“Ten (10) Ghanaians have also been interviewed by the Embassy to verify their nationality and ensure that they have received a fair hearing,” he added.
