“$500 IS TOO SMALL, LET’S GIVE ANAS $5,000” – Kennedy Agyapong Ridicules Journalist After US Court Verdict
NPP stalwart humorously mocks Anas after massive reduction of defamation fine from $18 million to $500.
Former presidential aspirant and leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has openly mocked investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas following a significant reduction in damages awarded against him by a US court.
Initially, the Superior Court in Essex County, New Jersey, had ruled that Agyapong pay Anas $18 million for defamation. However, after his legal team argued the amount was excessive, the court dramatically lowered the penalty to just $500, although it maintained the verdict of malicious defamation.
In a celebratory video circulating on social media, Kennedy Agyapong and his team were seen joyfully singing and praising God, clearly pleased with the revised ruling. During his address, Agyapong humorously suggested that the fine of $500 was insignificant to his team, even joking that perhaps they should voluntarily increase the amount to $5,000.
“The first lady is going to America on Thursday, so I will give her the $500 to go and pay… one of the team members has paid the $500. Almost all the team members can pay $500, so maybe we have to give Anas $5,000,” Kennedy Agyapong teased.
Anas, in response through his investigative outfit Tiger Eye PI, welcomed the revised judgment, emphasizing that the essential matter Agyapong’s malicious defamation had been affirmed by the court. Anas reiterated that the lawsuit was never about money but rather about truth and justice.
This defamation case originated from the 2019 legal action filed by Anas following Agyapong’s public accusations against him after the release of the “Number 12” documentary, which exposed corruption within Ghana’s football sector.
