Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin has raised fears that the government may not be able to pay salaries of its own works in the next three months.
“This is not to discourage the committee. In three months, the government may not be able to pay its own workers, he warned.
He informed MPs on February 24, 2022.
The Speaker did not elaborate on the “information at my disposal,” therefore this projection is uncertain.
But this comes amid continuing government consultations on the contentious Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), increased industrial union agitation over working conditions, and requests for better living standards.
The majority MPs have listed various intervention schemes that may not be realized if the predicted $7 billion income is not raised.
Mr Bagbin asked MPs to show leadership in addressing the upcoming compensation crisis.
“We must lead. “We have a lot to do,” he said.
