17 dormant political parties in Ghana have until Thursday, October 21, to demonstrate that they have offices in every area and district or risk having their registrations revoked, according to the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
Between May 16, 2022, and June 9, 2022, the commission allegedly conducted a statewide inspection of the offices of every registered political party, and it became apparent that some of them do not have the national character that is needed by law.
According to the Political Parties Act of 2000, the EC is required to cancel the registrations of parties in Ghana that are not present in all of the country’s districts and regions.
The commission announced its intention to enforce the rules strictly this time in a notice that was published on Thursday, October 13, 2022.
“The Commission intends to invoke Section 15 (3) (c) of the Political Parties Act of 2000, Act 574, which mandates it to cancel the registration of Political Parties which do not have offices at the National and Regional levels.
“In this vein, the following political parties are by this notice requested to show cause in writing to the Electoral Commission why their registration should not be cancelled,” the notice read in part.
