NOT EVERYONE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS A MUSICIAN – Ohene-Djan

According to renowned Ghanaian producer and director Abraham Ohene-Djan, not everyone working in the music business is a real musician.

On Friday, he said these things in a discussion with music group Keche and Prime Morning host KMJ on Joy Prime.

The director claims that technology has made it possible for everyone to write songs in the comfort of their own homes, and some of these songs have gone on to become hits.

Such people consider themselves musicians, which is not the case, in his opinion, when the song becomes popular for a while.

“Because of the way technology has interfered with the creative industry, these days somebody can buy a laptop, a camera, and have a production company in their bedroom. The same thing with the studio, and they say they’re musicians. So, we have some people who are involved in the music industry who are not musicians. They may get lucky and come up with something that will resonate with people one time, and that’s it; they can’t repeat it,” Ohene-Djan said.

He asserts that genuine musicians are the outstanding ones who relentless focus on hit songs, irrespective of generation. He also says that genuine musicians are adept at doing so.

Some people mistake the music industry for a social media trend, the producer continued.

He said, “People can trend on social media with a song and say they’re musicians, but in reality they’re not.”

He believes that the former hitmakers lack the credentials to perform as musicians. He also holds the opinion that people jam out to songs that speak to them at the time the song is released.

The creative director also said that regardless of the song’s melody, people will always appreciate well-produced songs.

He contends that as generations change, so do the people who inhabit them. He stated that, rather than writing hit songs, the marketing potential of a song is a key factor in today’s generation.

“The marketing space is very different now. It’s not really about hit songs per se, though songs will go viral if they resonate with people. We’re in a very different marketing space at the moment, and it’s not necessarily only about writing a hit song,” he asserted.
