The Akufo-Addo administration is being warned not to rule with an iron fist by award-winning actor and current politician John Dumelo in order to appease the youth.
John Dumelo expressed his disapproval of the 10% withholding tax on wins from gambling, lotteries, and other games of chance in a tweet on April 6 in response to a new tax measure that was enacted by the legislature and is awaiting presidential approval.
Mr. Dumelo argued that it is regrettable that the government seeks to tax people while barely providing jobs.
“Create jobs, you won’t create. The youth have created their own jobs too ahhh, you want to tax their winnings…..continue. That day will come when the youth will rise against you. It will be too late.”

Betting, lottery and game of chance winnings will become subject to a 10% withholding tax at the point of payout when President Akufo-Addo assents and gazette’s the new tax bills passed by parliament. Betting companies will also have a 20% tax on all revenue.
