The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has affirmed its intention to deploy its standby force to Niger to address the military junta that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum last month.
Despite widespread calls for a diplomatic approach, ECOWAS is proceeding with the military option. In a statement released on August 16 and posted on ECOWAS’ official Twitter account, the organization announced that a two-day meeting of army chiefs from the region would convene to finalize the plans for deploying the force.
