GHANA RECEIVES £210 MILLION UK FUNDING TO COMBAT ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

Antimicrobial resistance is a significant global health concern, leading to around 1.27 million deaths annually worldwide. The issue arises when bacteria evolve to a point where antibiotics and existing treatments are no longer effective. The funding aims to mitigate this threat by strengthening surveillance capabilities and building a skilled workforce.

The investment will also contribute to the UK-India Fleming Fund partnership, which will accelerate collaboration on AMR surveillance and support both countries in achieving their respective goals by 2030. The funding announcement coincided with the UK Health Secretary’s attendance at the G20 Health Ministers’ meeting in India.

AMR’s impact is substantial in the UK and around the world, and efforts to combat it require international cooperation and targeted investments to ensure the continued effectiveness of antibiotics and other medical treatments.
