GHANAIAN MOVIES CAN’T SURVIVE ON STREAMING PLATFORMS DUE TO HIGH DATA COST – Ola Michael

Film producer and director Ola Michael, bemoans the high cost of bandwidth in Ghana, as he claims it is a hindrance to the online streaming of Ghanaian films.

Ola Michael stated that the majority of Ghanaians who watch Ghanaian movies online are people who reside outside the nation since data is less expensive for them in an interview with Isaac Dadzie of GhanaWeb Entertainment.

In order to draw in more viewers, he suggested filmmakers wishing to use YouTube to cut their films down to a minimum length of 10 minutes

“If I, as a producer, want to get my film on a streaming platform, let’s say on YouTube, how many Ghanaians are going to watch that film, especially if it’s in 1 hour? Because people will be thinking about how much data they’re going to spend watching this movie,” he said.

He compared Ghana’s scenario to that of Nigeria, where he claimed that filmmakers are enjoying a sizable following and are producing films for Netflix, YouTube, and theaters.

“That is why we advise those that are doing YouTube things to break it down to a maximum of ten minutes at least so that they will be enticed to watch it.

“But if you’re doing a feature like the Nigerians are doing on YouTube, it’s not going to work for you unless you are lucky for Ghanaians outside to also get to know of it and watch it. So they are the ones that are helping with the streaming for us now,” Ola Michael said.

He called for increased funding and support for the Ghanaian film industry, claiming that it is dying due to exorbitant data fees.

The remarks made by Ola Michael contribute to the larger conversation about the exorbitant cost of internet data and how it impacts digital entertainment goods.

BullGod, the manager of artists, also mentioned in 2023 the high expenses of data in relation to the low popularity of Ghanaian music on streaming services.
