I HAD TO SEEK THERAPY AFTER THE DEATH OF MY PARENTS – SDK Dele

Ghanaian skit comedian SDK Dele has been transparent about his struggle with depression and his need for assistance.

The comedian, whose real name is Sadik Sulley, spoke up about how losing both of his parents impacted his job and mental health in a live studio chat on 3FM on February 26.

SDK Dele described his frequent episodes of melancholy and despondency to getting malaria.

“Yeah, I do get it more often, and that’s been crazy since I lost both parents. It really eats into me.

“So I’m like, let life go on. But honestly, it’s like you getting malaria. You can be like, ‘oh, it’s just malaria,’ Let me just leave it, but then it gets worse. So now I had to seek the advice of a therapist,” he said.

Speaking candidly about his experience, SDK revealed that although he attempted to manage his anguish when he was alone, he was constantly forced to deal with it when he was in public and on set.

“When you come outside, you have to smile, you have to laugh, just as you say. When the camera goes off, and the lights go out, when you go to sleep, it’s a whole lot,” he said.

He also acknowledged that there were moments when he struggled to do the chores that were given to him and that he lost his drive and inspiration to work. He claimed to have entered a state of thoughtlessness.

“I think it got to a point where I was not inspired. Sometimes the work will be there, but you can’t do it. You get into some zone where you can’t think of anything,” he admitted.

He stated that he made the decision to see a therapist, and he has been receiving therapy for some time now. He added that treatment was helpful for him and he urged others who were facing comparable difficulties to get professional assistance.

“I’ve been in therapy for a while though. I’m still on it. It works,” he said.

SDK Dele expressed gratitude to his friends and supporters for their love and support, adding that he hopes to get over his sadness and keep making people laugh with his skits.
