The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Virginia Palmer, has reacted to the passage of the anti-LGBT bill which has sparked a conversation on social media.
Ghana’s Parliament approved a bill aimed at promoting human sexual rights and family values, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBT bill. The legislation prohibits lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activities and criminalizes their promotion, advocacy, and funding in the country.
Under the new law, individuals engaged in such activities could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years, while promoters and sponsors of such acts could be sentenced to three to five years in jail.
Reacting to this via X, Virginia Palmer claimed she has some connections with people who practice homosexuality, thus it takes away their basic human rights.
She feared Ghana’s reputation on the global scene would be marred and would consequentially affect the economy of Ghana.
“I am saddened because some of the smartest, most creative, most decent people I know are LGBT. The bill Parliament passed takes away not only their basic human rights but those of all Ghanaians because it undermines their constitutional rights to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of the press.
It will be bad for public order and public health. If enacted, it will also hurt Ghana’s international reputation and Ghana’s economy”.
