BONO, BONO EAST, AHAFO AND ASHANTI TOP WAEC’S LIST OF EXAM MALPRACTICE HOTSPOTS

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has identified the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Ashanti Regions as the leading hotspots for examination malpractices across the country.

Over the previous two years, these regions have continuously reported high rates of exam irregularities, with the Central Region also exhibiting a concerning increasing trend, according to John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC.

“The hotspots in the country are the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Ashanti regions. You may think the figures elsewhere are higher, but in recent years, we’ve seen the Central Region’s numbers begin to rise as well,” Mr. Kapi said on the AM Show on JoyNews.

He clarified that although the numbers fluctuate every year, the trend shows that some regions have become repeat offenders in cases of exam misconduct. These include instances of impersonation, cheating, and the dissemination of documents that have been leaked.

He stated that WAEC is still working with school authorities and security agencies to stop the tendency, particularly as the Council looks into incidents from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Council recently denied claims that more than 34,000 results had been withheld, stating that official statistics had not yet been made public.

Mr. Kapi reaffirmed that any official announcement would come immediately from WAEC and that investigations into alleged malpractices are still ongoing.

Over time, WAEC has stepped up its attempts to guarantee the integrity of its exams by using strategies including serialized papers, improved monitoring, and real-time supervisor communication.

Additionally, the Council has advised candidates and the general public to refrain from participating in or encouraging exam fraud, cautioning that doing so could jeopardize Ghana’s educational system’s integrity.
