Ghanaian actress, Martha Ankomah has given her viewpoint on portraying characters with negative qualities in movies.
During an interview on Adom TV on August 13, 2024, she mentioned that she would accept roles as a “bad girl” as long as the storyline has a beneficial effect.
Drawing a comparison to Judas in films about Jesus Christ, she pointed out that although Judas is typically portrayed as the antagonist, his role was essential to the narrative.
Ankomah clarified that she would not think twice about taking on a role that has the ability to positively impact someone’s life, even if it required portraying a negative character.
“Judas is usually represented as the bad one, so the children don’t like him, but as we grow, we see that the actions of Judas made the actions on the story of Jesus. His role was central to the story.
“So for me, it depends on the story, if the story is going to have a positive impact and I have to play the bad girl just to change someone’s life for the better, I would do it,” she said.
She said her main focus is on the positive effects of her work and emphasized that acting is her main source of income, in response to possible criticism from audiences.
“It doesn’t matter, this is what I do for a living, this is what pays my bills, as long as what I do can change the life of someone. I don’t mind,” she added.
