FREE SHS SHOULD BE LIMITED TO ONLY PRACTICAL STUDENTS – Kyiri Abosom

The founder and leader of the Ghana Union Movement, Christian Kwabena Andrews, also known as ‘Kyiri Abosom, also known as Christian Kwabena Andrews, has suggested a major change to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

In his view, students enrolled in practical courses should be eligible for the Free SHS programme, while those pursuing theoretical courses should be responsible for covering their own fees.

During an interview with JoyNews, Kyiri Abosom stated that students who concentrate on theoretical subjects like law haven’t significantly benefited the country, prompting him to question why the government should fund their education.

He thinks that the nation should focus on investing in students who are expected to make a significant impact on the industrial sector.

“I think it’s better we give free [education] to those people who are going to do practical work, but those who want to learn theory to become a lawyer, you have to pay,” he said in the interview on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, monitored by ghanaweb.

When asked to elaborate on his reasoning, Andrews stated, “I think it’s your own business; we’re not going to benefit anything out of that. How can we train more lawyers in this country while we don’t even have a company? Look at these people in Parliament and the way they are behaving; everybody wants to be a lawyer. They just want to suck our blood but not go into the practical field where they put up a factory.”

Kyiri Abosom also opposed former President John Mahama’s suggestion to provide free tuition for first-year tertiary students, stating that what young people really require is training in skills, not free education.

He referenced Mahama’s own critique of the insufficient skills of SHS graduates, which he thinks adds to their joblessness.
