CURRENT STATE OF RIVER PRA IS EMBARRASSING, WE HAVE TO FIGHT GALAMSEY NO MATTER WHAT – Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has joined the plea to stop illegal mining, known as galamsey in Ghana.

The Asanatehene expressed his dismay at the poor condition of the River Pra and other water bodies in Ghana’s mining areas.

“Going to Cape Coast, I stood by the River Pra. I’m afraid I have to tell you that what I saw (the current state of the river) was so embarrassing. We have to fight galamsey, no matter what”, he said whilst addressing members of the Ghana Bar Association and some political heads at a dinner in Manhyia Palace.

The ruler of the Asante Kingdom wondered why those responsible for fulfilling their responsibilities seem apathetic towards individuals and groups who are allowed to harm human lives without consequences.

What could be more serious for a nation than to have its entire water supply system at risk?

“What does the law do when one pours mercury into the same water supply knowing fully that it can kill?

“Galamsey is an environmental enemy for the nation and to do nothing is no longer an option”, he noted

Otumfuo commended leadership of the Ghana Bar Association, University Teachers Association of Ghana and Ghana Medical Association for their bold statement on galamsey.

He however tasked the associations to come together and deliberate on ways that will help in bringing an end to the menace.
