PROTESTERS MUST BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY – Alan Kyeremanten On Arrest Of Anti-Galamsey Demonstrators

Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, has added his voice to the ongoing “Free The Citizens” campaign following the arrest of protesters demonstrating against illegal mining (galamsey).

Mr Kyerematen took to Twitter to criticize the deprivation of fundamental rights for detainees, stating that this behavior should not be accepted in any democratic country, especially in Ghana.

He called on the Ghana Police and appropriate officials to make sure that all individuals detained during the protests are treated with compassion. This covers the right to have a lawyer, the chance to talk to family, and access to basic needs.

I entreat the Ghana Police and other relevant authorities to ensure that all those detained are treated with dignity,” Kyerematen stated.

The demonstrations, which were intended to highlight the negative impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment, resulted in clashes with authorities and a string of arrests.

Since then, numerous activists and citizens have expressed worries about the detention of individuals, leading to the rise in popularity of the “Free The Citizens” campaign.

Kyerematen’s comment adds more momentum to the current dialogue regarding the right to demonstrate and the duty of officials to uphold democratic values, even during periods of social turmoil. His backing of the demonstrators highlights the increasing demands for fairness and responsibility in managing these protests.
