The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa said the NDC did not give any solid evidence to back up their claims about inconsistencies in the voter’s register.
This arises from the NDC’s worries about the register’s reliability before the 2024 elections.
At an IPAC meeting on Tuesday, October 1, Madam Mensa stated that the NDC had not provided any specific evidence to support their claims of inconsistencies, although the commission welcomes scrutiny.
She further stated that the party had been asked multiple times by the EC to provide proof for their allegations, but they had failed to do so.
Jean Mensa reiterated the importance of the voter’s register in the electoral process and urged for any concerns over its integrity to be taken seriously.
She pointed out that addressing the NDC’s concerns effectively would be challenging for the EC without proof. She stated that the commission continues to prioritize transparency and fairness.
Furthermore, the EC Chairperson restated that the existing voter’s register is still temporary and being revised as needed.
The exhibition process, which permits input from the public in the form of claims and objections, aims to detect and address any issues before the final version is released for the 2024 elections.
Madam Mensa urged all political parties, including the NDC, to maintain constructive engagement with the EC.
She reassured the public that the commission is committed to providing a trustworthy and precise register, guaranteeing a transparent and equitable election process.
“The NDC presented five category of issues with the register. The commission demanded of the NDC to present further evidence from the NDC but assured them that those issues are typical of every voter’s register, and it is what the exhibition exercise aim to unearth and fix it. Unfortunately, the NDC has still not presented any more evidence to the EC.”
“It is for these reasons that this IPAC meeting has been organised to enable all parties to present any evidence on discrepancies in the voters register, but it must be noted that the current register is not perfect, and not final,” she stated.
