CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN GHANA TO DEMONSTRATE AGAINST ILLEGAL MINING AND PETITION PRESIDENT AKUFO ADDO ON OCTOBER 11, 2024

The Catholic Church of the Accra Archdiocese will be leading a protest aimed at rallying Ghanaians from all walks of life to unite in both prayer and action to end the devastation caused by illegal mining locally referred to as galamsey.

The protest, scheduled for Friday, 11 October 2024, which is expected to draw support from over 50 organisations that have already voiced concerns over galamsey, will combine prayer with public demonstrations.

The Catholic Church’s participation is crucial in increasing awareness and instigating change as the nation deals with this urgent issue.

The decision of the Catholic Bishops Conference to lead the Church in a protest against illegal mining would have far-reaching and varied consequences.

Throughout history, the Catholic Church has consistently supported social justice, environmental protection, and safeguarding the vulnerable. The Catholic Bishops Conference’s opposition to galamsey highlights the ethical duty to safeguard the environment for the forthcoming generations.

This behavior aligns with the Church’s beliefs regarding the importance of protecting the environment and responsibly managing natural resources.

This position has the potential to rally Catholics and other religious groups, forming a strong alliance for fostering change.
