ANTI-GALAMSEY PROTEST: OLIVER BARKER-VORMAWOR DENIED BAIL

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the activist and convener of the Democracy Hub, has once again been denied bail by an Accra High Court following his arrest during a recent anti-galamsey protest.

Mr Barker-Vormawor was part of a group of protesters expressing their disapproval of illegal mining, known as galamsey, that presents major environmental hazards in Ghana.

Police reports state that Mr Barker-Vormawor was arrested for participating in unlawful activities at the protest, with further investigation pending on the specifics of the alleged wrongdoing.

He was arrested while taking the keys from a police van that was parked during the protest.

Justice Comfort Tasiame’s court refused his bail request, mentioning the requirement for more investigation and worries about potential public unrest if he were to be released.

The judge believes Oliver is currently being tried for treason, so there is no guarantee he won’t commit another crime if released on bail.

His lawyers claimed that his arrest breached his constitutional rights to freedom of speech and peaceful gathering, emphasizing that the demonstrations were nonviolent and aimed at bringing attention to the negative effects of illegal mining.
