The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has declared “Red Band” protest starting from today October 10, 2024, aimed at raising national awareness about the severe environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. This protest will serve as a powerful, peaceful demonstration, urging authorities to take swift and meaningful action to address the crisis.
In a statement, the coalition emphasized the widespread destruction that illegal mining continues to inflict on Ghana’s natural resources, including rivers, forests, and farmlands. The group expressed frustration with what they describe as insufficient governmental response, despite numerous public outcries over the years. “We mourn for our livelihoods, our rivers, our forests, and for the future,” the statement said, underscoring the urgency for change.
The “Red Band” protest calls on Ghanaians to stand in solidarity by wearing red armbands or headbands as symbols of protest. Citizens are also encouraged to tie red bands to their vehicles—whether cars, motorbikes, or bicycles—and to share their support online using the hashtags #StopGalamseyNow, #SaveOurLand, and #SaveOurFuture.
The coalition insists that the protest will continue indefinitely until tangible actions are taken to stop illegal mining activities and restore the country’s ecosystems.
“This is a peaceful, indefinite protest—we will keep going until we see real change!” the coalition declared, calling on Ghanaians to unite in defense of the environment and the country’s future.
