A miner working illegally, upset with the current government’s efforts to combat illegal mining, has promised to rally his community not to vote for the NPP in the December 7, 2024 general elections.
This response came after a military task force decided to set fire to the excavator he utilized for his mining operations.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), the miner expressed his frustration towards President Akufo-Addo’s continued initiatives to eradicate illegal mining.
He vowed that the NPP would face consequences at the polls, stating, “We will stop campaigning for the party, whether they like it or not, we will vote against them during the general elections. We won’t allow them to campaign in this area. Look at what they have done to this excavator, why should they burn it?”
In an attempt to combat illegal mining, a taskforce conducted a raid on Thursday, October 10, 2024, seizing and destroying 18 chanfan machines typically utilized for illegal gold extraction along the riverbanks. As part of the extended ‘Operation Halt’ campaign, 10 water pumping machines and other industrial equipment used in illegal mining were also demolished.
The government’s plan is a part of a larger strategy focused on protecting the environment, specifically in areas greatly impacted by illegal mining operations.
