‘IF YOU HELP LIFT SOMEONE TO YOUR LEVEL, THEY WANT EVERYTHING YOU HAVE’ – Ofori Amponsah

Veteran Highlife Artiste Explains Why He No Longer Mentors Young Musicians, Citing a "Sense of Entitlement"

Veteran Highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has revealed that he currently has no protégés in the music industry, citing the immense challenges and perceived ingratitude that often accompany mentorship.

In a candid interview on Hitz FM on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the artiste, who was famously mentored by the late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba, explained his reluctance to guide new talent despite benefiting from such support early in his own career.

Ofori Amponsah acknowledged his past efforts in nurturing artists like Kofi Nti and Kofi B but stated that he has since stepped back from such roles. He described mentorship as a “difficult thing,” primarily because some young artists develop a sense of entitlement without understanding the struggles required to achieve success.

“Sometimes you just lift up a person from where he is to your level, and if the person has not gone through…it would be a problem,” he said. Elaborating on the core of the issue, he added, “If you have a car, they want one. If you have a girl, they want one too. Everything you have, they want the same.”

The artiste suggested that many upcoming musicians desire to instantly enjoy the lifestyle of their mentors without being willing to endure the rigorous process of growth and hard work that underpins a sustainable career.

This perspective comes from an artiste who deeply understands the value of guidance. Daddy Lumba served as a father figure to Ofori Amponsah, transforming his career and instilling in him the values of hard work and consistency. This mentorship culminated in a series of hit collaborations in the early 2000s, such as ‘Woho Kyere’, ‘Anti Atta’, and ‘Odo Mmra Fie’, which launched Ofori Amponsah to stardom.

His current stance highlights a growing concern within creative industries about the dynamics of mentorship and the expectations between established icons and the next generation.
