Award-winning Ghanaian rapper, Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has hopped on the viral toy gun trend currently making waves among the youth in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.
In a video shared on the social media platform X, Medikal was seen playfully engaging in mock shooting with another individual inside his home using toy guns. His involvement comes in the wake of intensified police operations targeting individuals participating in the trend, which has sparked public concern.
The Ghana Police Service earlier announced the arrest of 26 individuals for brandishing and indiscriminately firing toy guns in public spaces. According to the police, the suspects are currently assisting with investigations and will be arraigned before court. Several toy guns have also been confiscated as part of ongoing inquiries.
The authorities have launched a special operation to apprehend others involved in the trend, which they argue poses potential risks to public safety. In a strongly worded statement, the police urged the public, particularly the youth, to desist from the act, emphasizing that it violates the law.
“We hereby caution the youth to desist from this act as it constitutes the offense of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace, contrary to Section 207 of the Criminal Offenses Act, 1960 (Act 29), among other violations,” the statement read.
The police assured Ghanaians of their commitment to maintaining peace and security across the country, stating, “We would like to once again assure the public that the police will do everything necessary to ensure that our beloved country remains peaceful.”
The toy gun trend has quickly gained traction in parts of the country, sparking mixed reactions from the public. While some view it as harmless fun, others have raised concerns over its potential to cause fear or confusion in public spaces.
