Peter Asamoah, a 39-year-old carpenter, has been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment with hard labor for the sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl in Yareyeya, a community within the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality. The victim is the daughter of the suspect’s former partner, who is 34 years old, as reported by the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
Asamoah, who entered a guilty plea with an explanation, was convicted by the Tarkwa Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu. During the proceedings, he claimed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offense and requested the court to exercise leniency in its sentencing.
According to Police Chief Inspector Owusu, on November 7, 2024, the complainant left the victim alone while attending to farm duties. Asamoah seized this opportunity to lure the child into his residence, where he forcibly engaged in sexual intercourse with her. The prosecutor indicated that during the assault, the victim expressed her distress through groans and cries for help, prompting a witness, identified as Kwakye, to intervene. Upon arrival, Kwakye discovered Asamoah in the act.
Without fear of repercussions, the victim did not disclose the incident to the complainant immediately upon returning home. However, on November 10, 2024, she recounted the events to the complainant. Chief Inspector Owusu further stated that the witness also informed the complainant, leading to a confrontation with Asamoah, who acknowledged his wrongdoing and sought forgiveness.
