On 15 January 2025, a police constable and three officers from the Community Assistance Police were violently assaulted by a mob in Akrofuom, Obuasi, as they attempted to apprehend a suspect named Sibuba, who was charged with making threats of harm.
The officers, consisting of G/Constable Solomon Okyere and community police officers Emmanuel Arhin, Alfred Danso, and Frank Owusu Afriyie, went to Sibuba’s home to detain him. The suspect asked to place a call to notify his family, and the officers agreed.
Soon after, a gang of roughly 50 armed criminals showed up and assaulted the officers. They were brutally attacked, and the crowd took an AK47 rifle from the police officer.
The assailants subsequently left the wounded officers in a nearby thicket, abandoning them to die.
In spite of their injuries, the officers succeeded in requesting reinforcements, and a rescue team took them to the Obuasi Government Hospital. They underwent treatment and have since been released.
A police Situation Report disclosed that the officers responded to a complaint from Anthony Siaw, who accused Sibuba of making threats.
The report verified that the mob showed up soon after Sibuba was permitted to make his call.
The event has heightened worries regarding the safety of police officers and the increasing pattern of mob assaults.
Law enforcement officials have initiated an inquiry to retrieve the stolen rifle and apprehend the individuals responsible.
