KWAMI SEFA KAYI URGES NDC TO RETURN TO PEACE FM’S KOKROKOO SHOW, CALLS FOR RECONCILIATION

Accra-based Peace FM’s renowned morning show host, Kwami Sefa Kayi, has publicly appealed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to end its five-year boycott of the station’s flagship program, Kokrokoo. Speaking on air on Monday, February 3, 2025, Sefa Kayi emphasized the importance of reconciliation, urging the governing party to “let bygones be bygones” and return to the show.

The NDC withdrew from Kokrokoo in May 2020, accusing Sefa Kayi of bias and describing him as a “dictator.” The party also criticized the show’s “unfair paneling system,” which it claimed disproportionately favored opposing views. In a statement signed by National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC expressed frustration over the program’s refusal to replace former NDC Central Regional Chairman Allotey Jacobs with what it deemed a more balanced representative. The party alleged it was treated with “utmost contempt,” prompting the boycott.

However, Sefa Kayi, during his recent broadcast, expressed optimism that the issues between the NDC and the show had been resolved. He revealed that Peace FM’s management and the NDC had engaged in extensive discussions, paving the way for a possible reconciliation.

“Five years is a long time for this boycott to continue,” Sefa Kayi stated. “I believe there is no problem anymore. This is a new year, and the NDC should let bygones be bygones. They should return so we can work together. At the end of the day, we need them, and they also need us. We have the biggest platform, and they are a formidable political party now in government. It’s a symbiotic relationship—the left hand washes the right hand, and vice versa.”

Taking responsibility for the past rift, Sefa Kayi called for mutual apologies to mend the relationship. “As the head of the morning show, I take responsibility, and I know management will back me when I say we should apologize to each other so that both parties can work together again. I don’t think that would be out of place,” he said.

He concluded by extending an olive branch to the NDC, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. “We are extending an olive branch to them. The NDC should come back, and let us work together as we did in the beginning. As I said, as the leader of the morning show, I take responsibility for what happened, so let us move on.”

The appeal comes when the NDC, now in power, and Peace FM, one of Ghana’s most influential media platforms, could benefit from renewed cooperation. Whether the NDC will accept the invitation remains to be seen, but Sefa Kayi’s call for unity underscores the significance of dialogue in fostering a healthy media-political relationship.
