Private Legal Practitioner Martin Kpebu has described actor and politician John Dumelo’s appointment as Deputy Minister for Agriculture as a strategic move to encourage young Ghanaians to embrace agriculture. While expressing surprise at the decision, Kpebu believes Dumelo’s youthful influence could significantly motivate the younger generation to venture into farming.
“Although I am surprised, Dumelo, being a very young person, his presence in the ministry would hopefully inspire more young people to take up agriculture,” Kpebu stated. He emphasized that Dumelo’s appointment could serve as a catalyst for the government to highlight the successes of young farmers and promote agriculture as a viable career path.
Kpebu further suggested that the government should launch targeted initiatives to showcase young farmers and their achievements. “We should have a special programme where they will feature these young persons on their farms. This will motivate unemployed youth to join cluster groups or associations, ensuring food security and reducing hunger,” he explained.
The legal practitioner also expressed optimism about Dumelo’s ability to leverage his popularity to attract more young people to the sector. “I am happy about the choice of Dumelo. I only pray that he uses his influence to get a lot of young people on board,” Kpebu added.
However, Kpebu questioned the previous government’s commitment to agriculture, noting that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was rarely seen on farms during his eight-year tenure. “What did the Akufo-Addo government do for agriculture? The president was never seen on any farm throughout his time in office,” he remarked.
Dumelo’s appointment has sparked discussions about the potential for youth engagement in agriculture, with many hopeful that his influence will drive a new wave of interest in the sector.
