Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker KayPeevibez has announced his decision to step away from shooting music videos, citing unfair treatment and poor compensation from some musicians. In an exclusive interview with Zionfelix, the video director opened up about his disappointing experience working with rapper Amerado, which ultimately led to his decision to quit the industry.
KayPeevibez revealed that after directing one of Amerado’s popular Yeti Nsem videos, he was offered a meager GH¢300 as payment, a sum he found insulting given the effort and resources he invested in the project. “This is one of the reasons I stopped shooting music videos. The pay is poor, yet they still expect you to deliver your best,” he lamented.
The filmmaker recounted how he supported Amerado during the rapper’s early days, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown, and played a pivotal role in shaping his visual identity. “Amerado started with me during the lockdown. As his fame grew, and after his trip to the UK, we began working on Yeti Nsem. People started following Amerado because of my work. I was responsible for everything, from the introduction to the visuals of Yeti Nsem,” KayPeevibez explained.
He further disclosed that he used his own equipment to film the initial stages of Yeti Nsem, with the understanding that he would continue to oversee Amerado’s music videos as the artiste’s career progressed. However, KayPeevibez claimed that Amerado’s management reneged on their agreement, offering him a contract that included the paltry GH¢300 payment. “I was there when Amerado reached out to me and told me his plans. I shared my ideas and what he should do. But when we started making money, his team brought a contract stating they were going to pay me GH¢300. That’s why I left his camp,” he said.
The filmmaker also expressed frustration over being sidelined as Amerado’s career took off. “I started Yeti Nsem with my equipment. They bought their own cameras in the third month of our filming. I told Amerado that I wanted to push him, and when he became famous, I would be the person in charge of his music videos. But can you believe I was there when they brought Gordon to shoot his official music video? He even brought in a different director to shoot his second music video with Okyeame Kwame. These are the reasons why I stopped working for him,” KayPeevibez added.
