FORMER FINANCE MINISTER KEN OFORI-ATTA DECLARED FUGITIVE, WANTED FOR CORRUPTION INVESTIGATIONS

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive and a key suspect in four high-profile corruption investigations. The cases under scrutiny include the controversial National Cathedral project, the Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) deal, and two additional undisclosed matters.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng made the announcement during a press briefing on February 12, 2025, stating that Ofori-Atta is now a wanted person and must return to Ghana immediately to face questioning. Agyebeng warned that failure to comply would result in legal measures to compel his return.

“Ken Ofori-Atta is a fugitive of justice and must present himself to the OSP without delay. We will take all necessary steps to ensure he answers for his role in these investigations,” Agyebeng stated.

The Special Prosecutor also dismissed claims that Ofori-Atta had traveled abroad for medical treatment, emphasizing that the former minister’s cooperation is critical to the ongoing probes. Agyebeng further refuted reports that OSP officials had raided Ofori-Atta’s residence on February 11, 2025. Instead, he alleged that the former minister orchestrated the raid to mislead the public and undermine the credibility of the OSP’s investigations.

“The narrative of a raid on his residence is false and designed to distract from the serious allegations he faces. We urge the public to disregard such claims and focus on the facts,” Agyebeng added.

Ofori-Atta, a prominent figure in the previous administration, is among several former government appointees under investigation for alleged corruption and financial misconduct. The OSP’s declaration marks a significant escalation in the case, as authorities intensify efforts to hold public officials accountable for their actions.

The National Cathedral project, one of the cases under investigation, has long been a subject of public scrutiny due to its ballooning costs and allegations of mismanagement. Similarly, the SML deal has faced criticism over transparency and accountability concerns.

As the OSP continues its investigations, Ghanaians are watching closely to see how the case unfolds. The declaration of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive underscores the government’s commitment to combating corruption and restoring public trust in governance.
