CLOGSAG DECLARES NATIONWIDE STRIKE OVER CONTROVERSIAL APPOINTMENT OF BIRTHS AND DEATHS REGISTRAR

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has announced a nationwide strike effective Thursday, February 20, 2025, in protest against the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

The decision was reached during a meeting of CLOGSAG’s National Executive Council (NEC) on February 11, 2025, where members expressed strong opposition to the appointment of politically exposed individuals to key positions within the Civil Service and local government structures. The association argues that such appointments undermine the neutrality and professionalism of the public service.

In a statement released after the meeting, CLOGSAG warned that it would initiate industrial action if Mr. Botchway assumed office. Despite these warnings, Botchway officially took up his role on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, prompting the association to follow through on its threat.

“The National Executive Committee has resolved that if Mr. Botchway assumes office, CLOGSAG will embark on an industrial action. Following his assumption of duty, we have no option but to proceed with a nationwide strike effective Thursday, February 20, 2025,” the statement read.

CLOGSAG has directed all its members to stay home from the start of the strike until further notice. The association’s decision is expected to disrupt operations across various government agencies and local government offices, potentially affecting essential services.

The appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway has sparked widespread debate, with critics accusing the government of politicizing the Civil Service. CLOGSAG’s strike action underscores growing tensions over the perceived erosion of merit-based appointments in favor of political considerations.

This development comes at a time when the government is already grappling with public discontent over economic challenges and governance issues. The strike could further strain relations between the government and public sector workers, who have repeatedly called for reforms to ensure transparency and fairness in appointments.
