AKUFO-ADDO’S LOYALTY TO OFORI-ATTA AND INTERNAL DIVISIONS LED TO NPP’S 2024 DEFEAT — Report

An analysis of the NPP’s poor performance in the 2024 elections has shown that President Akufo-Addo’s unwillingness to change his Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, along with increasing party divisions, played crucial roles in the party’s failure.

The report accessible to MyNewsGh indicates that 87% of those surveyed felt Akufo-Addo’s firm position on Ofori-Atta’s ousting was a pivotal moment that distanced both the electorate and party affiliates.

In 2022, 87 MPs, primarily from the Ashanti Region, came back from recess after hearing their constituents and openly called for Ofori-Atta’s removal.

Nonetheless, the President rejected these appeals, which was generally viewed as prioritizing personal loyalty over party concerns.

The outcomes were drastic. The report indicates that Akufo-Addo took action against supporters of Ofori-Atta’s ousting, reportedly causing some to lose their ministerial positions or be driven out of their constituencies.

This intensified rifts within the party, as numerous members of the Ashanti bloc felt they were being marginalized by what they termed the “Akyem Mafia”—a group alleged to prioritize people from the Eastern Region rather than the party’s historical stronghold.

One of the most debated choices was the involuntary resignation of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the NPP’s parliamentary head and a valued MP from Ashanti. His dismissal was viewed as a tactical mistake, since the substitute from the Central Region did not produce outcomes.

The report additionally describes the situation of Hon. Kweku Kwarteng, a well-regarded Ashanti MP and past Deputy Finance Minister.

In spite of his dedication and contributions to the party, he was suddenly dismissed from his role as Finance Committee Chairman, a decision that infuriated his supporters and almost jeopardized the NPP’s position in the 2024 elections.

Ultimately, the report illustrates a party fragmented by loyalty conflicts, internal reprisals, and factional distrust, with Akufo-Addo’s leadership at the heart of the turmoil.
