DUMSOR DIDN’T CAUSE THE COLLAPSE OF KUMAWOOD – Actor Fiifi Coleman

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker, Fiifi Coleman, has denied assertions that ongoing power cuts, commonly referred to as dumsor, were the primary reason for the downturn of Ghana’s film industry, especially the formerly prosperous Kumawood segment.

During an appearance on Onua Showbiz with Naana Kwame Gyan, Coleman contended that the difficulties facing the industry arise from more profound problems beyond power outages.

Coleman highlighted that film sets had historically depended on standby generators even prior to dumsor becoming a prevalent issue.

“Way back, even before dumsor, there were always generators on standby on sets, so I don’t know why or how my colleagues in Kumawood are tying dumsor to the decline of the industry,” he stated.

His remarks contest the commonly accepted notion that an inconsistent power supply was the main reason for the industry’s difficulties.

The filmmaker recognized Kumasi’s crucial role in Ghana’s film sector, characterizing it as the center of movie-making and a key provider of entertainment.

However, he observed that the industry’s downfall was partially a result of creative stagnation.

Coleman noted that the repetitive qualities of Kumawood films, along with a deficiency in creativity, resulted in diminishing audience engagement as time passed.

A time came when it was the same old storylines, and people became fed up with it,” he explained.
