KOFI BENTSI BENTIL CALLS FOR CITIZEN-LED REFORMS AT ACEP ANTI-CORRUPTION MEETING

At a recent breakfast meeting organized by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), renowned lawyer and business strategist Kofi Bentsi Bentil delivered a powerful message on the need for citizen-led reforms to address Ghana’s governance and economic challenges. The event, held on March 11, 2025, at Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra, brought together key media personalities and policy advocates, including Eugene Osafo-Nkansah, Ameyaw Debrah, and Ato Kwamena Dadzie.

Bentil emphasized that Ghana’s development cannot be outsourced to foreign institutions like the World Bank and IMF. “Poverty is a result of leaders not being held accountable by their citizens,” he stated. Bentil highlighted that no country has achieved sustainable development through external aid alone, reinforcing the need for local accountability and action.

The discussion also explored the inefficiencies within Ghana’s public sector, which absorbs a large share of national revenue without driving economic growth. Bentil urged citizens to recognize their power and demand reforms that enhance productivity and transparency. He also shared his experience opposing a forest sale, illustrating the risks of challenging powerful figures and the importance of environmental advocacy.

A significant portion of the dialogue focused on historical narratives surrounding Ghana’s independence. Bentil challenged conventional interpretations, urging a deeper understanding of history to address cognitive dissonance and inspire meaningful change. He also criticized the current towing system, which penalizes responsible vehicle owners, and called for community activism to push for better regulations.

The meeting concluded with a strong call for citizens to engage in governance, question government decisions, and demand transparency. Bentil’s impassioned speech resonated with attendees, who left inspired to take collective action to drive accountability and reform in Ghana’s public finance management and anti-corruption efforts.
