The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has raised alarming concerns over the financial state of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), accusing the previous administration of diverting revenue through a controversial third-party contract.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, March 24, the minister revealed that NITA’s account balance stands at a shocking GH¢25.08, despite the agency owing a staggering GH¢813.5 million. He described the situation as a clear case of “state capture,” where public funds are allegedly being siphoned to benefit a private entity.
Hon. Sam George alleged that while NITA’s infrastructure is being used to provide services, the generated revenue is being redirected to a private company under a contract signed by the previous government.
“NITA has a contractual arrangement with a third-party vendor, and I have summoned them for questioning. I don’t understand how all revenue meant for NITA is being diverted to this private firm,” he stated.
The minister disclosed that he recently refused to approve a payment of nearly GH¢4 million meant for the third-party company, referring the matter to the Attorney General for further investigation.
“Why should a private company earn millions from NITA’s infrastructure while the agency itself is left with nothing? All the debt remains on NITA’s books, while the revenue flows elsewhere. This is unacceptable,” he asserted.
Describing the situation as a “true definition of state capture,” Hon. Sam George vowed to present a detailed report to Parliament, exposing what he termed as financial mismanagement within the ministry under the previous administration.
“The rot in this ministry is deep, and I will ensure accountability. The people of Ghana deserve transparency,” he declared.
