The acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi is currently leading the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and has discussed a new law called the GoldBod Bill.
Once this bill is approved, it will give certain inspectors the power to stop illegal gold smuggling.
During an appearance on JoyNews PM Express on Tuesday, March 25, Mr. Gyamfi talked about the struggles in Ghana to enforce gold smuggling laws.
The main issue is that no single agency has full responsibility to deal with it.
“We are not enforcing the law on gold smuggling, and we don’t know the agency that is dedicated to the fight against gold smuggling.
“We’ve left it to the normal security agencies. But now you’re going to see in this bill, special powers given to the GoldBod, such as the right to appoint GoldBod inspectors,” he stated.
The GoldBod Bill plans to change that. Under this bill, inspectors will get authority similar to the police.
They will have the right to search for illegal gold, check if the necessary documents are available, seize gold that is traded illegally, and bring people who break these laws to court.
“If they have cause to believe that you are engaged in illegal gold trading or smuggling, they can seize your gold, they can impound, they can confiscate, they can go to court for such warrants by themselves,” Mr. Gyamfi added.
