GHANA SPORTS MINISTRY EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES FOLLOWING TRAGIC DEATH OF NIGERIAN BOXER

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has issued an official statement expressing profound sorrow over the passing of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who tragically died following a sanctioned light-heavyweight bout at Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday.

In a press release signed by Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Ghana’s Sports Minister extended the government’s deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, and the global boxing community.

“The Ministry and Government of Ghana stand in solidarity with our Nigerian counterparts during this difficult time,” the statement read. “Gabriel was a talented athlete whose passion and courage in the ring exemplified the spirit of the sport we all cherish.”

The statement confirmed the bout was an officially sanctioned eight-round international contest between Olanrewaju and Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu, organized under the auspices of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA). While the exact cause of death remains under investigation, the Ministry pledged full cooperation with Nigerian authorities and committed to reviewing safety protocols.

“This tragic incident reminds us of the inherent risks in competitive boxing,” Minister Adams stated. “We will work closely with all stakeholders to examine every aspect of this case and implement necessary measures to protect athletes’ wellbeing.”

The Ministry has requested patience as medical authorities complete their official report, while assuring the public that all proper procedures were followed during the emergency response. The statement concluded with a call for unity: “May Gabriel’s soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy inspire greater attention to boxer safety across Africa.”

The Ghana Boxing Authority has temporarily suspended all events pending review of the incident.
