DR. MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA LEADS NPP 2028 FLAGBEARER RACE WITH 48% SUPPORT – Global InfoAnalytics Poll
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, is leading the race to become the party’s 2028 flagbearer, according to a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics.
The survey places Bawumia ahead with 48.1% support, followed by Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong at 25.1%. Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum ranks third with 12.5%, while former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong stands at 7.2%. Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong and former Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh hold 4.1% and 3.0%, respectively.
Despite Bawumia’s lead, Mussa Dankwa, Executive Director and Head of Research at Global InfoAnalytics, cautioned that the figures indicate a tighter contest than anticipated. Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on April 2, Dankwa noted that Bawumia’s support remains below expectations, suggesting he faces challenges in consolidating his position within the party.
“Bawumia should not be happy with this; it’s too low. This means that the battle will be fiercer than the last time,” Dankwa stated, highlighting the ongoing internal competition in the NPP.
Kennedy Agyapong, who finished second in the NPP’s 2023 primaries, has maintained a strong presence but has not gained significant ground. Dankwa attributed this to Dr. Adutwum’s rising influence, stating, “I think he [Kennedy Agyapong] should be doing better. You could see that maybe Adutwum has eaten into his backyard.”
With the NPP now in opposition following its loss in the 2024 general election, the contest for the party’s next flagbearer remains open. The poll suggests Bawumia remains the frontrunner, but internal competition could reshape the race before the final selection.
