KENYAN STUDENT LOSES $21K STUDY ABROAD FUND TO ONLINE BETTING ADDICTION

A Kenyan scholarship recipient has publicly confessed to losing his entire $21,663 (KSh 2.8 million) study fund to the popular online betting game Aviator, leaving his UK education plans in ruins and plunging him into severe depression.

Dismas Mutai, who had secured admission for a Master of Science in International Project Management at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) London, broke down in an emotional public statement reported by Tuko News:

“I’m not okay; I will no longer pretend to be okay. I have fallen into a disastrous trap – one I never anticipated. Depression is slowly taking me to the grave,” the distraught 28-year-old revealed, noting his behavior had changed noticeably during his gambling spiral.

Mutai lost the entire amount meant for tuition and living expenses through Aviator, a crash-style betting game known for its addictive mechanics. The former star student begged forgiveness from his mother and relatives, admitting “I’ve failed the trust you placed in me” . Mutai described deteriorating mental health, stating the loss has made him question his future

“Perhaps the UK wasn’t meant for me,” Mutai lamented, while pleading for a second chance to “become a living testimony” about gambling dangers.

Experts warn this case exemplifies how seductive game designs like Aviator’s instant-payout model can override financial responsibility, especially among young Africans chasing quick money solutions.

He expressed deep distress, revealing that depression has taken a toll on him after falling into what he described as a “disastrous trap.”

“I’m not okay; I will no longer pretend to be okay. I have fallen into a disastrous trap, a trap that I never anticipated in my life. Depression is slowly taking me to the grave. You must have even noticed an unusual change in my behaviour. Aviator flew away with over KSh 2.8 million of people’s money,” he stated, as quoted by Tuko News, a popular Kenyan news website.

Mutai pleaded for forgiveness from his mother and family, acknowledging that he had broken their trust.

“To my mum and the entire family, forgive me. I understand the level of trust you had in me. I have weaknesses just like any other human being, and this has become my greatest weakness,” he said.

“Perhaps the UK was not meant for me, but just give me a chance to survive so that I can be a living testimony to many,” he added.

Mutai had secured a scholarship to pursue a Master of Science in International Project Management at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in London.
