The Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has set up a meeting with the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, for Monday, April 7.
The goal of the meeting is to discuss President Donald Trump’s recent decision to introduce a 10% import tax on goods from Ghana to the U.S.
Trump recently announced new import taxes, including a 34% duty on Chinese goods and a 20% tax on products from the European Union. Now, Ghana is facing a 10% import tax on its exports to the U.S.
This decision has increased global trade tensions. Countries like China and Canada are also getting ready to respond with similar actions.
In a statement on April 4, Okudzeto Ablakwa posted on X, saying the meeting will allow Ambassador Palmer to explain why these taxes have been introduced.
“I can confirm that I have invited US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer to my office on Monday morning to provide clarifications and reasons for President Trump’s imposition of 10% tariff on Ghana,” he said in his statement.
