Ghanaian actor and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has sparked debate after reacting to news of the Volta Regional Police Command’s destruction of 61 bags of cannabis.
The Ghana Police Service’s Volta North Command carried out the operation on Thursday evening at a refuse site in Gbi Wegbe, Hohoe Municipality, following a court order. Each of the 61 sacks contained 40 parcels of the illicit substance.
Dumelo took to Twitter to question the rationale behind destroying cannabis while cigarettes remain legal in Ghana. His post simply stated:
“… yet cigarettes are legal in Ghana.”
This comes amid ongoing discussions about Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020, which allows for limited medicinal and industrial use of cannabis under strict licensing, while maintaining prohibition for recreational use.
The Police Public Affairs Directorate has yet to respond to Dumelo’s comments, but maintains that the destruction of seized drugs is standard procedure to prevent their re-entry into the illegal market.
Dumelo, known for his vocal stance on social issues, previously advocated for agricultural reforms during his 2020 parliamentary campaign. His latest comments have brought fresh attention to Ghana’s drug laws and their enforcement.
