I URGE THE YOUTH IN BAWKU TO CHOOSE PEACE – Kennedy Agyapong

Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is calling for peace among the youth in Bawku.

In a statement on Sunday, April 13, Kennedy Agyapong shared his concerns due to recent increases in violence there.

In Bawku, in the Upper East Region, a police commander’s house was burned, resulting in one death.

The Bawku Divisional Police Commander, ACP Adamu Seidu, was attacked and set on fire by suspected attackers on April 9, 2025.

Tensions resurfaced when one group demanded that women from another group leave a local market. This led to a police intervention to calm the situation.

Unfortunately, things got worse when some young people allegedly started shooting at the police, leading to a gunfight. During this exchange, one civilian died, and two others were badly injured.

Several police officers and an immigration officer were also shot and are now being treated in the hospital.

Additionally, young people attacked the house of the Majority leader with stones, breaking windows and damaging parts of the building.

This attack escalated and turned into an arson incident the next morning.

There have been reports that the Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba has fleed for her life after gunmen attacked her private residence in Pusiga.

Kennedy Agyapong in the statement stated, “I have followed with deep concern the recent escalation of tensions in Bawku and surrounding communities. The recurring violent outbreaks and reprisals rooted in longstanding tribal conflicts continue to cause pain and instability among our people.

“At this critical moment, I call for calm—especially from the youth. No grievance, however deeply felt, justifies the loss of life or the destruction of our communities. Our peaceful coexistence is the foundation of the prosperity and development we seek, without which we cannot build the Ghana we all desire,” he added.

He further noted, “This is a welcome sign of statesmanship and national unity, one that places Ghana above partisanship”.

“When there is peace in Bawku, there is peace in Ghana. No part of this country can prosper while another is in pain. Ghana must move forward together,” Mr. Agyapong stated.
