Sam Nartey George has stated that the National Communications Authority’s (NCA) approval for more than 600 radio frequencies was a “careless and disproportionate allocation of radio frequencies in Ghana.”
During a television interview on The Point of View show on Channel One television on Monday night, [April 14, 2025], Sam George mentioned that the media environment in Ghana is oversaturated, with more than 600 frequency authorisations issued—something he sees as harmful to the industry’s development.
“I think we’ve abused the assignment of frequency authorisation. A country like Ghana should not have in excess of 600 frequency authorisations — it’s inimical to the growth of your business,” he remarked.
The Minister indicated that he would significantly cut the number of licensed radio stations to below 100 if presented with the chance, although he recognised that this move might be politically misinterpreted.
“If you leave me, I will rationalise this and you will have less than a hundred radio stations, but the next thing you hear is Sam George is shutting radio stations,” he stated.
Mr. George condemned several of the present frequency holders, alleging that they do not operate as proper broadcasting entities.
Instead, he stated that they mainly function as platforms for syndicated political discussion programs and recycled news material, without original content.
“You need to set KPIs for what a radio station really is. Many people are holding authorisation today and they are not doing any production. They just hold political shows and then they just repeat and syndicate radio news,” he explained.
He suggested implementing stringent Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess radio stations, asserting that spectrum distribution should be granted only to broadcasters that fulfil defined operational criteria.
“We must make a certain KPI benchmark. We can’t just be giving spectrum everywhere,” he stressed.
