A cappella gospel group Alabaster Box has officially filed a lawsuit against award-winning rapper Medikal for allegedly sampling their hit song ‘Akwaaba’ without permission in his latest single, ‘Welcome to Africa’.
The legal action comes after the group accused Medikal of using the first 10 seconds of their original track in his song and demanded its removal from all platforms. Despite deleting the contested portion from YouTube, Medikal has allegedly left the song intact on other major streaming platforms, including Audiomack, Boomplay, Spotify, and Apple Music.
In a writ of summons filed by their lawyer, Richard Nunekpeku, Alabaster Box claims Medikal’s failure to fully comply with their demands or engage in dialogue shows disrespect and an admission of guilt. The group is seeking GH₵10 million in general damages for copyright infringement and an additional GH₵5 million in exemplary damages, citing the unauthorized association of their brand with profane lyrics in Medikal’s song.
Earlier, the group had demanded: Immediate removal of ‘Welcome to Africa’ from all digital and traditional platforms, cessation of all promotions, performances, and commercial use of the song and full disclosure of revenue generated from the track and involved parties
Medikal is yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
