NFA WARNS GHANAIAN TV STATIONS OVER WIDESPREAD COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS
The National Film Authority (NFA) has issued a strong warning to television stations across Ghana over rampant copyright violations, calling for immediate action to regularize the broadcasting of copyrighted films, series, and creative works.
In a press release sighted by NKONKONSA.com, the NFA expressed deep concern over the persistent airing of local and international films without appropriate authorization, labeling it as a direct violation of Ghana’s Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690).
According to the NFA, many TV stations have been airing content without obtaining the necessary licenses from right owners or their authorized representatives, thereby infringing on the intellectual property rights of creators, producers, and distributors.
“This conduct not only undermines the hard work of our creative industry but also flouts the copyright laws of Ghana. It is a disincentive to filmmakers and a threat to the sustainability of the industry,” the statement read.
The Authority emphasized that the protection of intellectual property is critical to the growth of Ghana’s burgeoning film and creative sectors and vowed to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure full compliance.
The NFA announced that it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the Copyright Office, and other stakeholders to monitor and enforce compliance.
It warned that television stations found guilty of copyright infringement would face strict sanctions, including possible prosecution, closure of operations, and other legal penalties.
The Authority concluded by stating that a strong and well-regulated film and media ecosystem would significantly contribute to job creation, national development, and Ghana’s global cultural influence.
“We call on all stakeholders to support this crucial national effort to protect and project Ghana’s creative industry,” the NFA stated.
