Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has declared that childbirth services will be completely free for all women in government hospitals across the country.
Speaking with deep emotion and conviction, President Traoré described childbirth as “a miracle” and stated emphatically that no woman should face financial burdens while bringing life into the world.
“Today, I declare a new era of hope and compassion in our nation. Childbirth is a miracle, and no woman should face financial burdens while bringing life into the world,” he said.
He revealed a personal connection to the issue, recounting how his own mother nearly lost him at birth due to the cost of delivery, adding:
“From now on, any pregnant woman who walks into a government hospital must receive childbirth services free of charge.”
The policy, which takes immediate effect, is expected to ease the pressure on families, reduce maternal and infant mortality, and improve access to quality health care for women across Burkina Faso.
