3 TO BE DEPORTED; 3 TO FACE PROSECUTION OVER ILLEGAL GOLD TRADE – Ghana Gold Board

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has declared that three of the six foreign nationals recently apprehended for unlawful gold trading in the nation will be deported, while the other three will undergo prosecution according to the newly introduced Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140).

The declaration was made during a press conference on May 14 in Accra by Prince Minkah, the representative for GoldBod.

He clarified that the choice was influenced by the timing of the arrests concerning the April 30 deadline established for all foreign nationals to leave Ghana’s local gold market.

The initial set of suspects, all Indian citizens, was apprehended in the Ashanti Region prior to the implementation of the new law.

Although they were discovered to have violated current regulations at that time, they are not covered by Act 1140 and will hence be returned.

“They will be repatriated to their home country to reunite with their families,” Mr Minkah said, noting that the arrests took place before the legal cutoff.

The second group, on the other hand, was captured in Anyinam after the April 30 deadline and will face prosecution under the new law, which grants the Ghana Gold Board exclusive rights to trade gold locally.
“If you’re a foreigner and caught trading gold illegally, you will face the law,” Minkah warned, adding that the law was designed to end smuggling and restore transparency in Ghana’s gold sector.

Officials retrieved various items from the accused undergoing trial, such as gold weighing devices and significant amounts of U.S. cash. These have been seized as proof.

The Ghana Gold Board Act of 2025 seeks to enforce stricter regulations on gold trading and reduce the operations of unlawful exporters.

According to the new legislation, foreign persons and organisations are entirely prohibited from participating in the local gold market.
