GFA FINES NATIONS FC’S EMMANUEL ANNOR OVER ‘I BELONG TO JESUS’ CELEBRATION

Emmanuel Annor, a striker for Nations FC, was fined GH₵500 by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for violating behaviour regulations after he revealed a religious inscription while celebrating a goal against Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League.

Annor, who scored in the crucial match, removed his jersey to reveal an undershirt that read, “I belong to Jesus.”

The gesture was praised by several fans, but the GFA Disciplinary Committee declared it to be against league rules.

In an official statement dated May 13, 2025, the GFA clarified:

The player was found guilty of displaying a religious message on his undergarment after removing his shirt in celebration.

The GFA stressed that players are not allowed to display religious or political themes while playing, although respecting the emotional relevance of such gestures.

The purpose of these regulations is to keep all league games impartial and consistent.

Annor was also given a severe warning by the Disciplinary Committee, which warned that more severe penalties, such as suspension, might follow any further infractions.

He has also been strongly warned that any further misconduct will result in severe sanctions

The event has sparked debates about the relationship between professional sportsmanship and personal values among football fans and commentators.
