The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has verified two instances of Mpox (previously referred to as Monkeypox) in the Accra Metropolitan Area of the Greater Accra Region.

The declaration was issued in an official statement endorsed by the Acting Director General of the Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

As per the announcement, the Ministry of Health and the GHS are cooperating to enforce immediate and thorough public health strategies designed to control the virus and halt additional spread.

Mpox is a viral illness that is transmitted via close interaction with an infected individual, animal, or contaminated objects. Typical signs consist of skin rash, fever, headache, muscle and back discomfort, fatigue, and enlarged lymph nodes.

In reaction to the confirmed cases, the Ghana Health Service has initiated prompt contact tracing to locate and oversee individuals who could have come into contact with the virus. These people will receive medical advice and be monitored closely for any signs.

In support of containment initiatives, monitoring activities are being intensified in healthcare facilities and communities throughout the area.

This action is intended to quickly identify and examine any further suspected cases.

The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service have also intensified public education efforts to increase awareness regarding the disease.

These campaigns emphasize the indicators and manifestations of Mpox, its transmission, and the protective actions individuals can adopt to safeguard themselves and others.

The public is encouraged to practice good hand hygiene, steer clear of close interactions with symptomatic people, and promptly report any suspected Mpox cases to the nearest healthcare provider.

Reassuring the nation, Prof. Akoriyea emphasized that there is no need for widespread alarm. “Ghana’s public health system remains vigilant,” the statement noted, adding that all established protocols for managing infectious diseases are being rigorously followed.

The government has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting public health and conveyed trust in the ability and skill of Ghana’s health entities to efficiently handle the circumstances.
