Celebrating Wilberforce Mfum’s Legacy
Born on August 28, 1936, Wilberforce Mfum was a key figure during Ghana’s golden football era. He played a pivotal role in Ghana’s historic victory at the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring critical goals, including in the final.
Mfum’s international career highlights include:
- 26 appearances for Ghana
- 20 goals, a record among Ghana’s top scorers
- Representation of Ghana at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics
- Club career spells with Asante Kotoko, Swedru All Blacks, and U.S. clubs Baltimore Bays and New York Cosmos
Mfum was celebrated for his footballing intelligence, composure, and contribution to elevating Ghana’s status in African football. He passed away on May 11, 2025, aged 88.
